“Mary” is a woman from China who was being emotionally and physically abused by her husband. When Mary was burned in the face with a cigarette by her abuser, the neighbors reacted to her screams by calling the police. Her husband was arrested that night, but returned home and threw Mary out of the house. She had no place to live and would have been homeless, but the police brought her to Mosaic House. For the first week, Mary refused to eat, bathe, speak or allow anyone to touch her. Her case manager, who is from a similar cultural and linguistic background, nursed her back to health. The second week at Mosaic House, Mary could not stop herself from crying. She felt abandoned by her family and rejected by her community, which discourages a wife from leaving her husband. Her case manager referred her to a counselor and Mary began to believe in herself and her right to live without violence. She began to communicate with the people around her and even made friends with the other women in the shelter. Mary started attending English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and computer classes offered at Mosaic House. As her English improved, so did her emotional health. She now had the confidence and determination she needed to face the challengesof being independent. She moved into an apartment with a woman she met at her church, who was also a survivor of family violence. Today, Mary and her friend are reaching out to their communities and informing women that theyhave the legal right to live without violence, and that there are resources in place to offer services to women who want to leave an abusive environment. Recently, a woman came to Mosaic House who had left her violent husband. When asked how she knew about the shelter, she stated that Mary had informed her of her rights to live violence-free and that she could come to Mosaic House for safety. Mary has come a long way, and has become an advocate for women’s rights in her community. If you or a loved one has been a victim of Human Trafficking, Please call Mosaic Family Services, Inc.
