Nicholas Kristof: Gifts That Say You Care
Nicholas Kristof: Donate to Charities This Holiday Season Give Grandma a bit of credit! These holidays, would she rather receive a silly reindeer sweater or help a schoolchild acquire glasses to see the blackboard clearly for the first time?
Choosing the perfect holiday gift is one of life’s greater challenges, modestly more difficult than earning a Ph.D. in astrophysics. So it is time for my annual gift guide.
For starters, the Web sites of the major humanitarian organizations offer alluring holiday gifts. Through the International Rescue Committee, $30 buys a flock of chickens for a needy family. At CARE, $29 gets a girl a school uniform. Through Heifer International, you can stock a fish pond for $300. With Mercy Corps, $69 can start a female entrepreneur in the sewing business.
Beyond those organizations, here are some lesser-known charities that may help put a grin on Grandma — and on someone else.

International Medical Corps Responds to Earthquake in Turkey
International Medical Corps Responds to Earthquake in Turkey Alexandria, VA (October 24, 2011) - Update: Rescue workers and residents in eastern Turkey battled near-freezing temperatures and darkness searching for survivors after Sunday's earthquake - the country's most powerful in more than a decade. Using flashlights, shovels, heavy machinery and even their hands to lift debris, rescuers climbed over collapsed buildings in search of victims.
As of Tuesday morning, at least 360 people are dead, said Turkish Interior Minister Idris Naim Sahin, and the death toll is expected to increase as workers uncover additional damage. Another 350 people were injured. The 7.2 magnitude quake struck Sunday afternoon at 1:41 p.m. local time near the city of Van, which borders Iran.
Roughly 20 aftershocks rattled eastern Turkey in one of the nation's poorest areas, with the largest measuring at a magnitude of 6.0. Many of Global Impact’s 58 charity alliance members have programs in Turkey including, International Medical Corps who currently has a team on the ground in Ankara, Turkey, monitoring the situation. “International Medical Corps has a relief team and supplies on standby in the region,” said Rabih Torbay, International Medical Corps’ Vice President of International Operations. “We are currently liaising with Turkish authorities via our local implementing partners to determine the extent of the damage and the potential needs in the area, and are ready to respond as needed.” Because of its position on major geological fault lines, Turkey is very susceptible to earthquakes.
Global Impact’s charities will continue to monitor the situation on the ground and provide support to those in need.

Project HOPE Celebrates Successful Operation to Separate Conjoined Babies in China
SUCCESS STORY: Project HOPE Celebrates Successful Operation to Separate Conjoined Babies in China A successful operation to separate four-month-old conjoined twin girls in China highlights the pioneering work of U.S. humanitarian organization Project HOPE, which trained the medical team that conducted the high stakes procedure.
The six-hour operation took place at Shanghai Children's Medical Center (SCMC), which was established with the support of the Virginia-based NGO, Project HOPE, a member of Global Impact’s charity alliance, and its mission of forging lasting health care around the world.
Chief Pediatric Surgeon, Dr. Chen Qi Ming, cardiovascular surgeon and SCMC President, Dr. Liu Jinfen, and their medical team operated to separate twin girls “An An” and “Xin Xin” who were born in April, connected at the liver and pericardium - the sac that contains the heart.
“The wonderful medical team at SCMC made history again by operating on the twin baby girls - the third set of conjoined twins who underwent this procedure successfully at SCMC. Project HOPE is also very proud to share in this achievement as all of the clinicians and nurses who participated in the surgery and clinical care were HOPE-trained fellows,” said Lily Hsu, of Project HOPE in Shanghai.
The Shanghai Children’s Medical Center is one of the world’s premier pediatric heart centers, performing lifesaving heart surgery on nearly 2,500 children each year. Project HOPE helped develop the facility, which opened in 1998, and has provided more than $30 million in medical equipment. HOPE continues to support SCMC through at least 16 training programs for professional health care workers in the areas of diabetes, children’s nutrition, HIV/AIDS and nurse training.
"This intricate surgery is another indication of how Project HOPE's mission of training local doctors, nurses and health professionals can offer the gift of life for generations to come," said John P. Howe III, M.D. and President and CEO of Project HOPE.
"It also shows how cooperation between US-based groups and Chinese authorities can create expertise and enhance public health in fast emerging China."
Project HOPE has been involved in efforts to improve the health of communities in China for more than 28 years through a strong partnership with the Ministry of Health in addressing needs and advancing health professional training with the support of corporate partners. China’s large population, diverse demography, and rapid economic development have had a major impact on the needs for and distribution of health care services.
About Project HOPE
Founded in 1958, Project HOPE (Health Opportunities for People Everywhere) is dedicated to providing lasting solutions to health crises, with the mission of helping people to help themselves. Identifiable to many by the SS HOPE, the world’s first peacetime hospital ship, Project HOPE now conducts land-based medical training and health education programs in 35 countries across five continents.
