On May 1, 2009, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warned consumers to stop taking Hydroxycut, a dietary supplement used by dieters and bodybuilders. The warning comes after 23 reports of serious health issues were linked to the line of Hydroxycut products. The majority of health reports are related to liver damage and injuries. Due to the health risks associated with the supplements, the manufacturer of Hydroxycut, Iovate Health Sciences U.S.A., Inc. has issued a voluntary recall on 14 Hydroxycut products. Hydroxycut Products Affected by the Voluntary Recall
Approximately 9 million packages of Hydroxycut products were sold last year. All Hydroxycut-branded items except for Hydroxycut Cleanse and Hoodia products have been recalled.
Health Concerns Linked to Hydroxycut
Liver illnesses have been linked to Hydroxycut. These health problems range in severity from elevated liver enzymes and jaundice to severe liver damage that may require a liver transplant. Other potential health risks include seizures, cardiovascular disorders, muscle damage and kidney failure. Liver failure as a result of taking Hydroxycut products has resulted in one confirmed death. These disorders are believed to be a result of one Hydroxycut's key ingredients – hydroxycitric acid. This ingredient is derived from a tropical fruit called Garcinia Cambogia and appears to be potentially hepatoxic (harmful to the liver.) Symptoms That May Indicate Hydroxycut-Induced Liver DamageSymptoms that may indicate liver problems include:
If you or someone you know has taken Hydroxycut and has health concerns, consult a doctor. Blood samples may be taken to check for elevated levels of enzymes in the liver. If enzyme levels show problems, the doctor will recommend steps right for your situation. In extremely rare cases, irreparable liver damage may occur. In such cases, a liver transplant may be necessary. Time Table for the Recall
Iovate instigated an immediate recall for Hydroxycut products on May 1, 2009. As of this date, the recalled products should no longer be available for purchase. For Hydroxycut products purchased before the recall, Iovate suggests returning the product to the original place of purchase.
