Fitness with Anne 'Kip' Watson

For nearly a decade as a Licensed Professional Counselor, I helped those struggling with eating disorders and addiction put their lives and families back together. As fate would have it, my weight soared after having my kids in my 30’s. As an ordinary wife, employee, and mother, I weighed over 200 pounds. Any belief was long gone of my dream of being a professional athlete. But, today, I am a 43-year-old sleek, fit, professional tackle football player. Dreams do come true when you do the work and prepare yourself.

For nearly a decade as a Licensed It is true most professional athletes are not in their 40’s. And, that is definitely the case among football players. But who is to say when you are ‘too old’. We live one life. Many times we have one opportunity to accomplish something or make a dream reality. God has graciously given me this opportunity in my 40’s.

I know for far too long I waited - scared to try things or make opportunities happen. I lost out. And, like many people I see in my office or in the gym, I chose to give in to the idols of laziness and comfort. Yes, it is easier to sit and watch American Idol several nights a week than do the hard work to achieve your dreams. During a three year period of time, I slowly took the weight off and changed my body. I wanted to do it right. There was no need for it to come of fast. Generally when you lose weight in a rapid manner, it does not stay off. Diets and rapid weight loss programs do not work.

My formula, if you are looking for one, involved changing the way I ate and exercised. I changed what and how much I ate. I did not deprive myself. In fact, I still have my ‘cheats’ and enjoy them when I do 80% of changing my body, however, related to my diet lifestyle. I started eating ‘clean’ and avoiding non-nutritive valued items like chips, fried foods, processed meats, and sodas. I combined lean proteins, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates.

I exercised 5 days a week. I did 30 to 60 minutes of intense cardio 4 to 5 days a week. Leisurely strolling through the neighborhood was not an option. I did kickboxing, spin, boot camp, step aerobics, elliptical trainer, treadmill, and Stairmaster workouts. I also included resistance training 3 to 4 days a week. When I did not see the results I wanted, I worked with a trainer and continued to eat clean. It was not easy and it still is a lot of hard work to maintain playing form. But, time ticks by and what you do with that time is key. The next year will go by and each decision you make regarding your food and exercise will impact your life.

How different will the next year be if you continue to make good choices in both areas? If you struggle with weight, appearance, diet, disordered eating, and motivation. I’ve been there. I know what it is like. It is possible to overcome and achieve what you desire! Thus, as a Counselor, Trainer, and a Professional Athlete, I now train folks who want to get healthy and fit through Gridiron Girls Training Camps with my teammate All-Pro LB Jen Welter, personal training, and Counseling. My goals include encouraging and impacting you to live a clean and active life and to never utter the words, 'I can't'! I love looking into someone’s eye and see the change when they know they CAN !
